William J. Felchner's Blog
Be forewarned, The Road is coming to a theater near you... Cormac McCarthy's post-apocalyptic novel, The Road, was all the talk in 2006-07. The book not only won a Pulitzer Prize but was also a featured pick on Oprah Winfrey's Book Club. The Road tells the story of a nameless father and son as they make their way through a burned-out America following a cataclysmic event. They're headed south to escape the relentless cold, encountering along the way cannibalistic survivors and organized gangs of outlaws. The Road stars Viggo Mortensen as the Father and 11-year-old Kodi Smit-McPhee as the Son. Charlize Theron plays the Wife (as seen in flashbacks) while Robert Duvall appears as the Old Man and Guy Pearce as The Veteran. John Hillcoat directs The Road, which was filmed primarily in and around Pittsburgh. Hillcoat found the Steel City in winter to be the ideal locale for his bleak, post-apocalyptic world. Used in the shoot were abandoned coal fields, a deserted amusement park and a barren eight-mile stretch of forgotten highway. Also included were actual scenes from Katrina-ravaged New Orleans and volcanic Mount St. Helens in Washington state. The Road can first be glimpsed on September 11, 2008, at the Toronto Film Festival. The movie is slated for general release on November 26, 2008. Hopefully, The Road will measure up to such past golden entries in the post-apocalyptic movie sweepstakes as On the Beach (1959) and The Omega Man (1971). Hit it, Willie..."On the Road again..." |
