MGM is set to release the movie Dead Like Me: Life After Death in 2009. Based on Showtime's hit show Dead Like Me the movie follows the lives of several grim reapers.

February 17, 2009, MGM Studios is set to release to DVD, Dead Like Me: Life After Death to several anxiously awaiting viewers, curious to have closure for the lives of some of their favorite characters. The show is a story about a bright, but apathetic young woman who is randomly killed by a toilet seat falling from space, who must deal with the hardships of coming of age as a grim reaper.

The show originally aired on Showtime between 2003-2004 before it was canceled. There is much mystery over the show's cancellation. According to IMBD, producers and show executives were in conflict over the direction of the show. And while the ratings of the show have never been released, Mary Macnamara writes in "Science Fiction Delivers Mainstreatm Hits," [August, 19, 2007] ratings for Dead Like Me may have been triple that of other Prime Time shows of that year.

Dead Like Me: Life After Death Plot Synopsis

In MGM's direct to DVD movie, fans will get to say hello to their favorite characters. According to MGM's official Dead Like Me: Life After Death website, the cast of characters returning include:

  • Cynthia Steven as Joy Lass
  • Ellen Muth as Georgia Lass
  • Callum Blue as Mason
  • Britt McKillip as Reggie Lass
  • Jasmine Guy as Roxy
  • Christine Wiles as Delores Herbig
  • Crystal Dahl as Crystal

The biggest absence from the list is Mandy Patinkin, who has not returned to play the key character of Rube Sofer. Patinkin was excellent as the father figure of the group, handing out reaping assignments on yellow post-it notes and helping young Georgia navigate the afterlife and young womanhood.

With Rube on a higher plane, Cameron Kane steps in as head reaper, giving out directions via text message and bringing out the worst in his fellow reapers. But the main story line seems to take place between Georgia and her very much alive, but haunted sister Reggie, who still can't get over her sister's death, nor the fact that she reaped her best friend.

The Future of Dead Like Me

Fans have been waiting for a return of Dead Like Me since its demise in 2004. Petitions, letters and e-mails have circulated the internet, message boards and chatrooms. As a response, MGM announced it would release several special shows and straight to DVD Dead Like Me movies ("MGM Announces SF DVD Slate").

Fans who are interested may be able to pre-order the DVD of Dead Like Me: Life After Death from such websites as Amazon. Otherwise, those looking to get a sneak peek at the new show can look up Dead Like Me: Life After Death on MGM's main website or go to popular sites such as youtube.com to see quick trailer clips of this new film.

This tie-up to the series was awesome! It was funny and it had heart. Brilliant cinematography; it kept with the asthetic of the original series. Well perfomed. What more need be said except BRING BACK THE SHOW!
