Expanding the Perception of Reality Through Film

Feb 9, 2009 Robert Oakes

Time, space and reality according to quantum physics are not as linear as once believed. These are a few movies that can provoke questions about reality.

The most powerful movies are not ones set in a far away galaxy, but instead deal with the here and now and the perception of what is considered normal reality. Many of these movies are based on concepts that are congruent with mystic, shamanic, and quantum physics schools of thought.

The Matrix – The originator of the term “take the red pill”, this movie is based upon what many feel to be an analogy for mysticism, shamanism, quantum physics and the nature of enlightenment.

Donnie Darko – An amazing film dealing with the complexities of space, time and reality. Artfully brings up the argument of free will and fate.

The Fountain – A cerebral film that probably warrants multiple viewings to pick up on the symbolisms. It deals with the cyclic nature of life, death, and rebirth.

The Isle (Seom) – This is a Korean film that is a bit disturbing and heavy with symbolism into the nature of existence.

What Dreams May Come – A film that deals with death and grieving in a very different manner than the usual way. It uses the construct of heaven and hell as a projection of self judgment.

Lathe of Heaven – Are dreams simply non-manifest reality? This movie likes to think so, as one man’s dreams shape waking reality.

What the Bleep Do We Know – A very well done movie/documentary asking questions about perception, belief and the nature of reality.

Powder – A tale of a young man with amazing abilities. Good film to illustrate how differences challenge the status quo.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – A good exploration into the nature of memory and reality. Again it brings up the issue of chance and fate.

Open Your Eyes – This is the original film that was remade in the USA as Vanilla Sky. Very little difference between the two, and once again they are well done at questioning what is real and what is mind.

Fight Club – It is debatable whether this movie falls into this classification, but it does make the viewer question what is mind and what is reality. It definitely is an intriguing film.

Jacob’s Ladder – Meant to be an interpretation of the Tibetan Book of Liberation (Tibetan book of the Dead), it is a psycho thriller of a man dealing with death and attachment. It is a great trip into the Bardos land between living and dying.

So there are a dozen movies that look at the nature of reality and perception. Hopefully there a few movies on that list that will spark discussion and lively debate at the next movie night.
