Star Trek XI to introduce audiences on May 8, 2009 to a fresh perspective on a classic crew.
The newest trailer for Star Trek XI is being shown across the country in the previews before James Bonds' Quantum of Solace. It shows a gritty, realistic version of Star Trek that allows fans to believe that in one or two hundred years this could be our world. Months ago director J.J. Abrams, known for creating Lost and directing the cult hit Cloverfield, released the first teaser on Star Trek XI – a group of welders and engineers forging the U.S.S. Enterprise. Last week's newest trailer shows the fresh faces of the crew and sets the stage for character tensions that will play out in the film. Abrams' take on the new Star Trek franchise is intense and will pull in a new generation of space cowboys like a tractor beam. The Times Online recently quoted Abrams' as saying “I want fans of Star Trek to come watch it, but the truth is I made the movie for future fans.” The special effects are eye-popping, yet eerily realistic as if one could wake up tomorrow and consider the scenery a reality. In May, Star Trek XI will be joining the ranks of other recent blockbusters that were essentially prequels, such as Batman Begins and Ironman and is likely to draw in more fans. James T. Kirk Shows his Wild SideThe new trailer opens with Kirk, played by Chris Pine, as a child nearly driving over a cliff in a red sports car, but manages to bail at the last minute. He's also seen cruising on a speed bike, further solidifying his daredevil nature. Kirk's need for speed and reckless disregard for rules that encapsulates the much loved starship captain will most likely be a major theme in the new film. (It's unclear if the movie will show Kirk reprogramming the dreaded Kobayashi Maru and become the the only cadet to ever pass the unconquerable test.) It also showcases one of Kirk's well-known vices, mainly beautiful women. It was no secret in the classic television series that Kirk was an intergalactic ladies man, and it is only reiterated in a scene on the Enterprise with Kirk and a beautiful crew member who appears as if she stepped out of a Victoria's Secret advertisement. Mr. Spock Fights his Human SideEvery fan of the show is aware that Spock is born of a Vulcan father and human mother. As a result he is constantly fighting his human side which exudes anger, jealousy or, most frighteningly for Spock, the lack of logic. The new Spock will be played by Zachary Quinto, better known as Sylar from Heroes. The trailer features a emotional Spock, who attacks Kirk during an argument they have on the bridge of the Enterprise. Of course the original Spock, played by Leonard Nimoy, who is making an appearance in the new film, would never attack Kirk. Yet, on the other hand, this is perhaps a young Spock who recently left Vulcan and has to learn to contain his dark, human urges. Both characters and the rest of the crew will face the evil Romulan leader Nero, played by Eric Bana from Troy, who attacks another federation starship. According to the television show, the Romulan race is a distant ancestor to the Vulcan people, but the Romulans chose to embrace emotion instead of logic.
