Ah, there is nothing like the smell of fresh Blu-rays in the morning. Now that HD-DVD has been toppled and Blu-ray is the stand alone winner of the war consumers are free to embrace the new format, and there are some great movie releases to choose from.
I am Legend, staring Will Smith was released on Blu-ray this week, and it includes some much talked about extra content, namely an alternative ending.
The film is based off of the 1954 Sci-fi novel, I am Legend by Richard Matheson. The book has been brought to life more then once in theaters but this adaptation seems to be the stand out hit.
In the film Dr. Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a research scientist who is trying to find the cure for a virus he believes has whipped out the human race. There are a few people who appear to be immune to the virus, and Neville is one of them. His beloved dog can not get the virus via airborne contact and thus stays by his side.
Neville is based in New York City and is surrounded by people infected with the virus, they are not dead nor are they alive. They appear to be infected with a rabies type virus that eventually turns them into ravenous zombies.
He has set up stores and different areas with mannequins in an attempt to make himself feel less alone; this serves as a point in which one must ask, is Neville crazy?
Neville spends three years of the movie attempting to find a cure for the virus by using his own blood, which he believes holds the key to immunity and thus recuperation and sending out radio messages hoping to find another immune survivor.
The film in the theaters was wonderful, but it left viewers with question, a lot of questions and the plot has some holes but the performance is worth while and Smith manages to single handedly keep the audience entranced in the film.
The Blu-ray quality of this film is fantastic, better then has been seen from several other current Blu-ray releases and the alternative ending is definitely worth a peek. It gives viewers an entirely different ending as well as several different scenes that were not present during the theatrical release of the film.
Along with the alternative ending viewers who choose to buy the Blu-ray will get some other interesting special features including a commentary on the research that was done for the film and how close the current human race could be to such a disaster. Don't watch it if easily terrified.
A special effects feature is also included that shows how the film was produced and what special effects and techniques were employed by the creators.
I am Legend is a Blu-ray definitely worth buying. Fantastic film, solid video quality and great special features.
