When Terminator Salvation hits theaters on May 21, audiences will see Christian Bale as John Connors, but they'll also see Sam Worthington as the robot Marcus Wright.

The trailer for Terminator Salvation (2009) does not reveal much about Marcus Wright. It only gives audiences vague implications that he might be different from the Skynet machines trying to end mankind, but the actor who plays Wright is a different story.

Sam Worthington in Australian Cinema

Sam Worthington does not have the name recognition of lead character Christian Bale, but this graduate of the Australia National Institute of Dramatic Arts is an accomplished actor in his home country. Worthington first appeared in the play Judas Kiss as a member of Australia’s acclaimed Belvoir Street Theatre group, before making it as bone fide movie star in the land down under.

  • Appeared in the movie Macbeth (2006). He played Macbeth in a modern retelling of the play set in Melbourne Australia.
  • Appeared in the movie Somersault (2004). He won the Best Actor Award from the Australian Film Institute for his role as Joe, son of a local cattle rancher, who sleeps with the 15-year old lead character Heidi played by Abbie Cornish.

Sam Worthington in American Cinema

Worthington did not quite burst into American movies, it was more like he slipped in quietly through the back door. It started with a small role as Cpl. B.J. "Depot" Guidry in the movie Hart's War (2002). While Terminator Salvation (2009) will be his introduction to wider American Audiences, it certainly won't be his last in the states.

  • James Cameron, director of previous Terminator movies, chose Worthington to be lead actor in his upcoming Sci-Fi epic Avatar (2009) after watching his performance in Macbeth (2006). The movie is still in post-production.
  • Pairs with Keira Knightly in the romance drama Last Night (2009). The story follows a married couple that spends a day apart from each other.
  • Set to play Young David in The Debt (2010). The movie follows a Nazi War criminal being chased by vigilantes trying to take the law into their own hands.
